Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked the unanimous passage of a bill offering $2,000 relief checks to Americans on Tuesday, the New York Post reports.
The bill had already passed through the House of Representatives with support from members of both parties.
The unanimous passage bill was supported by Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The $2,000 stimulus checks have also been endorsed by President Trump, who called the $600 checks "a disgrace."
Despite his opposition to the original bill, Trump signed into law the coronavirus stimulus promising $600 checks as a government shutdown loomed and millions of Americans faced anxiety over the future of their unemployment benefits.
The law offers $600 for every American making less than $75,000 a year, and nothing for Americans making over $95,000 per year.
The stimulus package coupled with an omnibus spending bill will cost the American government $2.3 trillion.
