BREAKING: Mitch McConnell discharged after extended hospitalization, won't return to work until Fall at earliest

Senator Mitch McConnell has been discharged from a rehab center after an extended hospitalization following a fall in his Washington, DC home that took place in June. His statement said that he will remain in his home through the state work period, or until the Fall. 

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff. On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business," McConnell said in a statement.

After being hospitalized during a June 14 fall inside his home, McConnell has not been seen in public, fueling speculation for his fitness to serve in office. McConnell's term as senator for Kentucky will be ending January 2027.

Although he was not heard from publicly for days after the incident, McConnell posted a health update mid-July, saying that the hospitalization was due to a fall in his home and he developed a mild case of pneumonia while at the medical center.

His doctors have said that although he fell, he did not suffer from broken bones and did not have a heart attack, stroke, or hemorrhage.

“I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,” he said when he gave the last health update. The lawmaker, who has been in the Senate since 1985, has said that he will retire at the end of this term.
