Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was found unconscious and possibly suffered a heart attack last month, according to a District of Columbia Fire and EMS dispatch call made public on Wednesday.

The June 14 call detailed a dispatch to the 84-year-old Kentucky senator's Washington, DC residence, where first responders were told that "CPR was in progress" due to a "cardiac arrest."

The call was first reported by journalist Desiree Townsend.

McConnell's office declined to comment on the dispatch call. On the day of the incident, however, spokesperson David Popp said the senator had been receiving excellent care in the hospital. Popp also maintained that McConnell was working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters; he continued his recovery.

Senate Majority leader John Thune also said he spoke with McConnell via phone and that the senator was dialed in on official business.

McConnell's latest hospitalization follows a string of well-documented health scares in recent years. In March 2023, the Kentucky Republican suffered a concussion and fractured rib after falling at a Washington hotel, sidelining him from the Senate for nearly six weeks. Later that year, he sparked widespread concern after twice freezing mid-sentence during public appearances, once at a Capitol news conference in July and again during an event in Kentucky in August. His office had said at the time that he had been medically cleared to continue working, per Newsweek

McConnell has continued to experience falls in the years since, including a sprained wrist and facial injury after falling at the Capitol in December 2024 and another fall inside the Capitol in October 2025. Earlier this year, he was also hospitalized for more than a week with flu-like symptoms before returning to Senate duties. Despite the repeated health incidents, McConnell has remained in office, though he announced he will not seek an eighth Senate term and is expected to retire when his current term ends in January 2027 according to Newsweek.

Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate," McConnell said in prepared remarks provided in advance to the AP. "Every day in between I've been humbled by the trust they've placed in me to do their business here. Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last."
