Police are conducting a major operation after a Montreal police officer was shot and hospitalized while pulling over a vehicle in the city's north end.

No arrests were made and police are searching for a suspect.

"The #SPVM confirms that one of its police officers was seriously injured during an intervention in the Parc-Extension sector. A police operation is in progress. Further details will follow," a tweet from the Montreal police reads.

Police spokesperson Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant said that the officer was shot in the upper body near the city's Marche Central shopping complex in the Park-Extension neighbourhood.

Police say the officer was seriously injured and was conscious on his way to the hospital.
