Additional footage of the moments following the brutal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte, NC light rail train on August 22 have been released. The footage shows Zarutska cowering in fear after being attacked, her hands over her face, spattered in blood.
Not a single rider came to her aid in the new footage. Instead, they get up and move away from her. Career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr, 34, can be seen walking away from Zarutska after attacking her. As he walked through the train car, he muttered, "I got that white girl, I got that white girl." Graphic footage of the stabbing was also released.
Zarutska died at the scene as a result of her injuries.
Brown has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Zarutska. He had been arrested 14 times and served time in prison on felony charges prior to killing Zarutska. The killing took place in August; however, the footage of the stabbing was released over the weekend, leading to an outcry against soft-on-crime policies.
Footage showed Brown walking around the train car, blood dripping from his hand as Zarutska later fell to the floor. Brown is homeless and has a lengthy criminal record that goes back to 2011. In the aftermath of the killing, President Donald Trump has also spoken out about the murder and cashless bail policies that allowed for Brown to be roaming free. Brown had been arrested and released 14 separate times.
"I have seen the horrific video of a beautiful, young Ukrainian refugee, who came to America to escape the vicious War in Ukraine, and was innocently riding the Metro in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was brutally ambushed by a mentally deranged lunatic. The perpetrator was a well known career criminal, who had been previously arrested and released on CASHLESS BAIL in January, a total of 14 TIMES. What the hell was he doing riding the train, and walking the streets? Criminals like this need to be LOCKED UP," Trump said.
He then said that her blood was on the hands of "Democrats who refuse to put bad people in jail." Trump slammed Roy Cooper, the former governor of North Carolina over the stabbing. "North Carolina, and every State, needs LAW AND ORDER, and only Republicans will deliver it! Additionally, where is the outrage from the Mainstream Media on this horrible tragedy? VOTE FOR MICHAEL WHATLEY FOR UNITED STATES SENATE, HE WON’T LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN!" Trump added.
In his most recent brush with law enforcement prior to the stabbing, Brown was detained after making a false report to 911. He claimed to cops that he had been given a “man-made material” that controlled his actions. When police said they could not do anything about the "material," he became agitated and then called 911, leading to his arrest.
After the 911 call incident, Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes released Brown with a "written promise" that he would return for his next court date. Previous to that arrest, Brown was put in prison for five years starting in 2014 after being convicted for robbery with a dangerous weapon. After he was released, he was arrested again for an assault on his own sister.
A neighbor to Zarutska family told the New York Post that her family has been taking her taking the murder "really hard."
“She was sweet, the whole neighborhood loved her. She did a lot of pet sitting for neighbors, she was a good, sweet person,” the neighbor said. Zarutska father was not able to attend the funeral because he is eligible for the Russia-Ukraine war, the neighbor said.
“The dude was homeless. Where was he supposed to go from there? I feel like it’s a major failure,” the neighbor added. “He had nobody, his mom had given up on him because he was too violent."
