According to NPR's David Folkenflik, Berliner was suspended on Friday for five days without pay for violating policies regarding working for other outlets. NPR journalists are required to obtain permission before providing content to outside news organizations, and while Berliner's appearance on Chris Cuomo's NewsNation show was approved, his Free Press article was not.
In a letter to Berliner, NPR said he was being given a "final warning," and that failure to abide by the policy again would lead to his termination.
In his article, titled, "I've Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," Berliner broke down what he believed went wrong.
"Race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace," Berliner he, noting that journalists were "required to ask everyone we interviewed their race, gender, and ethnicity (among other questions), and had to enter it in a centralized tracking system," and that everyone was "given unconscious bias training sessions."
He maintained that despite the notable slide into partisan programming, defunding the public broadcaster was not the answer. Change, he contended, could only come from within.
Berliner's article went viral, and prompted a response from CEO Katherine Maher.
"Asking a question about whether we're living up to our mission should always be fair game," she wrote, "after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions. Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
