On Thursday, Letitia James, the Attorney General for the State of New York, asked a judge to hold Donald Trump in contempt of court and fine him $10,000 for every day he doesn't provide documents her office has requested.

The documents were requested by means of a subpoena by James's office in what she called a "crystal-clear" order. Trump, according to James, had until March 30 to comply.

The original subpoena was issued on Dec 9 2021, and the Trump Organization has reportedly not turned in a single document requested by James. Spokespeople for Trump's legal team at the time called the ongoing investigation a "witch-hunt."

The investigation has been ongoing since March 2019, and has focused on the former President's real estate dealings, looking for evidence of potential "civil fraud."

The Trump team, in turn, has filed a counter-suit against James personally, alleging abuse of power. The suit aims to shut down the investigation entirely.

James was originally planning to run for governor in Oct 2021, but later changed her mind, stating that she had too many important cases – presumably the case against the Trump organization among them — to leave her current job as Attorney General without closing firs.
