Three children aged five, eight, and 11 were killed in the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.
The teen gunman who was taken out by a father after killing three children and a teacher at an Oregon elementary school has been identified as 16-year-old John J. Griffin II.
Three senior law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation revealed the gunman’s identity to NBC News. Two senior law enforcement officials said that the teen’s mother had purchased the long gun used in the shooting around his birthday in August. Griffin shot through the elementary school’s locked doors in order to get inside. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said that he was found dead inside the school minutes after gunfire was first reported.
The shooting took place on Thursday afternoon, with children ages five, eight, and 11 being killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, as well as a teacher. Additionally, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. The five-year-old victim has been identified by the family as Rhoam Summer.
Griffin was shot dead by the father of students at the school. The father, who has been identified as Kaylub Giamanco, stormed into the elementary school when he saw the suspect go in at around 1 pm. Police scanners captured dispatch relaying that the suspect had been neutralized, “possibly shot by a father at the school,” as police were arriving.
