BREAKING: Republicans lose George Santos' former seat to Democrats in special election

The special election for ousted Rep George Santos former House seat was held on Tuesday, and the Republicans lost the seat. Democrat Tom Suozzi beat out Republican Mazi Pilip 59 to 41 percent. Republicans still hold a majority, but Democrats have inched one seat closer to control. Suozzi will be up for reelection in November.

New York's 3rd Congressional District will now be controlled by Democrats after the Republicans gave up the seat though Santos has not been tried or convicted on any charges.



Santos slammed his former colleagues in a tweet shortly after the election of Suozzi. Santos was voted to be expelled on December 1, 2023.

During that vote, the yea votes were cast by 105 Republicans and 206 Democrats, while the nays were 112 and 2, respectively.

Santos was ousted after being indicted for "one count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, two counts of wire fraud, two counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), two counts of falsifying records submitted to obstruct the FEC, two counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of access device fraud, in addition to the seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the United States House of Representatives that were charged in the original indictment," in the Eastern District of New York.

Suozzi had previously held the seat. The former Long Island Representative, initially elected to the House in 2016 and successfully re-elected in 2020, relinquished his position to embark on an unsuccessful primary campaign for governor against Hochul in 2022.

Additionally, he had previously held the position of Glen Cove's mayor from 1994 to 2001 and served as Nassau County's elected executive from 2002 to 2009.
