Ryerson University is officially changing its name, following months of protest and the successful toppling of the Egerton Ryerson statue by radical activists.

According to The National Post, the school’s board of governors approved a motion today to accept all 22 recommendations from a special task force. One of these recommendations is to rename the school. This task force was assembled as a result of nationwide protest against Canadian historical figures who played a role in Canada's dark history around residential schools.

Egerton Ryerson was one such Canadian educator who is seen by some as the architect of the Canadian residential school system.

Mohamed Lachemi, Ryerson University’s president, says the task force has shown how the school “can move forward and write the next chapter in our history.”
