Former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has been reinstated on X after being suspended from the platform in 2020 when it was Twitter. His account was reinstated on Saturday.

The news broke on X, and ALX posted, “BREAKING: Steve Bannon (@StephenKBannon) has been reinstated to X.”

Grace Chong, the CFO and COO of Bannon’s War Room podcast posted in response, asking if Bannon will “start tweeting.”

His reinstatement highlights the notable shift to allowing more free speech on X under the leadership of Elon Musk. Musk has previously reinstated other banned figures as part of a broader effort to bring back conservative voices that were censored. Bannon’s initial suspension followed comments made on his talk show, War Room, during which he rhetorically suggested that Dr. Anthony Fauci and FBI Director Christopher Wray be beheaded.

Bannon said in jest, "I'd put the heads on pikes. Right. I'd put them at the two corners of the White House. As a warning to federal bureaucrats: Either get with the program or you're gone." The post was deemed a violation of the platform’s terms of service and Bannon was suspended.

More recently, Bannon was jailed for several months in prison due to contempt of Congress charges. He did not appear for a deposition for the J6 committee, citing presidential immunity at the time. Although Democrats under the Biden-Harris administration have faced contempt of Congress charges, such as Attorney General Merrick Garland and Hunter Biden, they did not face jail time as a result.

Some have pointed to the time behind bars given to Bannon as well as former Trump staffer Peter Navarro as evidence of lawfare against more conservative figures under the Biden-Harris DOJ.
