Paxton and his allies have accused the government agency of using its Global Engagement Center to intervene in the media market to censor domestic news organizations under the guise of countering foreign propaganda.
"Today, I'm suing the US State Dept," Paxton wrote on X. "I am proud to lead the fight to save Americans' constitutional rights from Joe Biden's tyrannical government. The State Department's mission to obliterate the 1st amendment is completely un-American. This agency will not get away with their illegal campaign to silence citizens & publications they disagree with."
In a press release, Paxton suggested that via the GEC, the State Department "actively intervened in the news-media market to limit the reach and business viability of domestic news organizations by funding censorship technology and private censorship enterprises."
He noted that while Congress authorized the creation of the GEC "expressly to counter foreign propaganda and misinformation," the agency has instead "weaponized this authority to violate the First Amendment and suppress Americans' constitutionally-protected speech."
Paxton described their actions as "one of the most egregious government operations to censor the American press in the history of the nation."
