A Toronto Police officer has reportedly died after being intentionally struck by a vehicle in a parking garage underneath City Hall.
"It is with profound sadness that I confirm the death of Const. Jeffrey Northrup of 52 Division," Ramer said, according to CTV, while providing a situational update Friday morning.
Ramer said Northrup had responded to a call in the parking garage near Queen and Bay streets just after midnight. Northrup, who had been in plainclothes, had responded with another officer to a "priority call" in the area.
Ramer said the incident was "deliberate and intentional," adding that the Homicide unit has been called in to investigate.
In the hours following the tragic incident, a large police presence as well as the service’s Collision Reconstruction Unit was on scene.
Northrup was a 31-year veteran of the force, and leaves behind a wife and three children, as well as his mother.
Police stated that one suspect is currently in custody. No other information about the call has been released.
Toronto Mayor John Tory attended the situational update and extended condolences to Northrup's family.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his sadness regarding the event on Twitter.
