"Present Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolf and the great family of Sarah Beckstrom with the award created by our late great President, George Washington himself. It's called the Purple Heart."
"Andrew has battled back from the edge of death, and we're talking about the edge of death on his way to a miraculous recovery. He's got a little work to do, and he's doing great. Nice to see he's a good-looking guy. Nice to see you. Thanks, Andrew. Thank you very much," Trump said.
"So Andrew, while you're up now, I'm going to ask a highly respected general ... to present Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolf and the great family of Sarah Beckstrom with the award created by our late great President, George Washington himself. It's called the Purple Heart," he added.
Both Beckstrom as well as Wolfe were patrolling in Washington, DC after being called to assist in the region from West Virginia, and were allegedly shot by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who has entered a not guilty plea after being charged with the murder of Beckstrom. Lakanwal is also facing assault in the shooting against Wolfe.
Lakanwal, an Afghan national, came to the US under Operation Allies Welcome in September 2021 under the Biden administration. He previously served in the Afghan National Army and worked with American agencies such as the CIA.
Prosecutors said that the Guard members were patrolling the area when Lakanwal approached them at point-blank range and fired. Beckstrom died on Thanksgiving. Wolfe, who was critically wounded by the shot to the head, made a miraculous recovery over the course of several weeks, and was able to attend the State of the Union in person.
