On Monday morning, Judge Juan Merchan found Donald Trump in contempt of court for the tenth time for violating the gag order placed on him.

"I find you in criminal contempt for the 10th time," Merchan said, according to CNN, as the trial entered its fourth week.

"Going forward this court will have to consider a jail sanction," Merchan said.

He added that "incarceration is truly a last resort."

Speaking directly to Trump, Merchan said, "it's important you understand the last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president as well."

"The magnitude of this decision is not lost on me but at the end of the day I have a job to do," Merchan said. "So as much as I don't want to impose a jail sanction...I want you to understand that I will if necessary and appropriate."

"But at the end of the day I have a job to do and part of that job is to protect the dignity of this judicial system," he said.

Merchan said that Trump's "continued willful violations of this court's lawful order" constituted a "direct attack on the rule of law."

On April 30, Trump was found in contempt of court after Merchan ruled that he violated nine of 10 gag order violations presented by the prosecution. He was ordered to pay $1,000 per violation.

Trump is prohibited, under Merchan's order, from "making or directing others to make public statements about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses concerning their potential participation in the investigation or in this criminal proceeding," and from making "public statements about any prospective juror or any juror."
