"I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey, of Minneapolis. Lots of progress is being made."
President Donald Trump announced on Monday evening that he had a "very good" conversation with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and that border czar Tom Homan would be meeting with the official on Tuesday. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino and a group of agents are expected to leave the Minneapolis area, while border czar Tom Homan is being sent to oversee ICE operations in the city.
"I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey, of Minneapolis. Lots of progress is being made," Trump wrote. "Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow in order to continue the discussion." Trump announced earlier in the day that he would be sending Homan to Minnesota "tonight." He also said that he had a conversation with Walz, and that the two "seemed to be on a similar wavelength."
This comes as the White House earlier in the day said that US Customs and Border Protection would not be needed in the city, as well as across Minnesota, if Frey and Governor Tim Walz implement "common sense cooperative measures" regarding illegal immigration.
On Saturday, anti-ICE agitator Alex Pretti was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. The shooting occurred during what Bovino described as a targeted enforcement action against illegal immigrant Jose Huerta Chuma, who has a criminal history that includes domestic assault intended to inflict bodily harm, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license.
Speaking at a press conference, Bovino said agents were confronted by Alex Pretti during the operation. “DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien, Jose Huerta Chuma,” Bovino told reporters. “During this operation, an individual approached US Border Patrol agents with a nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun. The agents attempted to disarm the individual, but he violently resisted.” He said that a Border Patrol agent "fired defensive shots," and that despite medical care being administered at the scene, the subject was pronounced dead.
