BREAKING: Trump says he would accept short-term House Speaker role until GOP unifies behind permanent replacement

On Thursday, 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump said that he would accept a short-term position as Speaker of the House until the party could unify around a long-term replacement.

"I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress," Trump told Fox News. "If they don’t get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president."

"They have asked me if I would take it for a short period of time for the party, until they come to a conclusion—I’m not doing it because I want to—I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision," Trump said.

Trump said that if a speaker is not found, he would accept the speakership for a "30,60, or 90-day period."

"I would only do it for the party," he said,  adding that his focus is on his 2024 presidential campaign.

It was revealed on Thursday afternoon that Trump is considering a visit to Capitol Hill next week to talk with House GOP before the lawmakers’ internal speaker election, which is set to take place on Wednesday.

The House is without a speaker after Kevin McCarthy was ousted in a 216 to 210 vote. Reps. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise have both put their names forward for consideration for the role.
