Former President Donald Trump's YouTube channel will be restored after being suspended for more than two years, the big tech video-sharing site said in a statement on Friday.

“We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run up to an election," YouTube said in their statement.

The move is in line with other big tech platforms like Meta and Twitter, who have allowed for the former president to return to the platform, though he has yet to post on those sites.

While Twitter and Facebook removed Donald Trump's accounts following the Capitol riot due to concerns of inciting violence, YouTube restricted his channel from uploading new content but did not take it down.

YouTube lifted the restriction on Trump's account, partially due to his 2024 presidential campaign.

Leslie Miller, YouTube's Vice President of Public Policy, stated that they weighed the risk of real-world violence with the importance of providing equal opportunity for major national candidates to be heard by voters.

In November, Twitter, now under Elon Musk's ownership, restored Trump's account, while Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, restored his accounts in February.
