The game had all the hype with the Chiefs trying to defend their title against the Buccaneers and the greatest quarterback of all time. On paper, this game appeared to have a chance to go down as one of the top Super Bowl games in history. Instead, it was a one-sided, somewhat yawner of a game.  The excellent schemes from Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich were genius. On the flip side, the Chiefs struggled with a beat-up offensive line, had too many penalties and appeared unprepared.

In the first quarter, the Chiefs got on the board first with a 49-year field goal by Harrison Butker. Little to be known at the time, but Butker would produce all the points the Chiefs would get.  Tampa Bay came right back late in the quarter, executing a drive of mixed ranged passes, culminating in a touchdown from Tom Brady to Rob Gronkowski from eight yards out. The Buccaneers led after one, 7-3.

The Chiefs gained just 14 yards on their next two possessions and after appearing to hold the Buccaneers to a field goal, committed an offside penalty that led to a second touchdown pass from Brady to Gronkowski.  With a 14-3 lead the Chiefs needed a score to stay in the game.

A solid, 10-play, 61-yard drive by the Chiefs ended up in points, albeit another field goal. Even so, they were still in the game at 14-6. However, a huge 34-yard pass interference penalty on the Chiefs with 24 seconds left in the half led to a one-yard touchdown from Brady to Antonio Brown and a rout was in the making at 21-6 at the half.

Needing a touchdown to get back into the game, the Chiefs took the second half kickoff at marched to the Buccaneers’ 35-yard line before settling for a third Butker field goal. Down 12, the Chiefs needed a defensive stop to keep momentum going. However, a seemingly effortless six play drive or four passes and two runs resulted in a 29-yard touchdown run by Leonard Fournette to put Tampa Bay up, 28-9.

A field goal in the fourth increased the lead to 31-9 and the Chiefs had no answer to try to make a game of it. Their last four possessions resulted in two interceptions and two turnovers on loss of downs. Patrick Mahomes ran for his life all day, accumulating around 500 yards just scrambling away from Tampa Bay’s pass rushing onslaught.

Tom Brady threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns, winning the MVP and his seventh Super Bowl title in ten appearances.  Patrick Mahomes threw for 270 yards and was intercepted twice in the loss. In the end, unless you were a fan of the Buccaneers, the game was a disappointment due to the lack of competitiveness.  Now the fans can look forward to the NFL 2021 mock draft.

Despite going down in defeat, the future for the Chiefs is looking bright according to the odds makers. They are the very early favorites to win the Super Bowl next year, followed by the Packers, the Buccaneers and the Bills.
