The California government has put a moratorium until at least the middle of 2023 on their planned vaccine mandate for students in the state's schools.

Dr. Mark Ghaly, the director of California Health and Human Services, stated that more time would be needed to implemenet the mandate, and that July 1 2023 is the earliest date they would be ready.

According to local news, "California is one of two states, plus the District of Columbia, that has announced a coronavirus vaccine mandate for K-12 public schools, according to the National Academy for State Health Policy."

It has also been made known that there are legal complications with both of these plans for mandates, as no vaccine has been given approval by the FDA for people under 18 years of age, aside from the currently-valid emergency-use approval.

Local news further reports that the bill would be comprehensive from K-12, but would allow for both medical and personal-belief objections to receiving the vaccine.

Currently, while the state of California is 75 percent vaccinated, this figure is much lower for children. In the 12-17 age group it drops to around 66 percent, and in the 5-11 demographic it is just over one in three.

School staff in California have already been required to take the vaccine as of Aug 11 2021.
