MPs in the House of Commons unanimously voted for a motion urging the city of Ottawa to rename part of a street home to the Russian embassy after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, governments and citizens around the world have found ways to show their support for Ukrainians.

In Canada, along with material assistance and boycotts of Russian goods, there have been numerous symbolic gestures aimed at helping Ukraine.

The latest such gesture involves potentially renaming a section of Charlotte Street in Ottawa, home to the Russian embassy, after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The motion was first put forth by NDP MP Charlie Angus.

"Why don't we rename it Zelensky Blvd?" Angus said in a tweet, citing the fact that the Ukrainian president "has redefined Russia's relationship with the world."

When brought to the House of Commons, Angus' motion passed unanimously.

The city of Ottawa has not responded to the idea, however there has been no shortage of pro-Ukraine activity in the area around the Russian embassy. On Wednesday, CTV reported that the city had installed "Free Ukraine" signs on the street poles.

According to Mayor Jim Watson said the signs are meant to send a message, that "every single day a Russian employee goes into work, they will be reminded with these signs looking down on them that they are engaged in war crimes and an illegal war."

Other city buildings have donned blue and yellow in support of Ukraine as well.
