Liberal Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough's press secretary told French newspaper La Presse that Canadians returning from an out of country trip could be eligible for the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB).

The CRSB, one of Justin Trudeau's many COVID welfare programs, gives $500 per week to Canadians who are unable to work because they have to quarantine. The two-week quarantine period mandated by the government would mean that international travellers could get $1,000 of taxpayer money for travelling.

The program is available to those who do not have employers that provide medical leave, even if their trip was not essential.

Qualtrough's press secretary says that the program was made to be flexible, and that Canadians are supposed to only leave the country for essential reasons. We do know though that there has been a lot of non-essential international travel done by Canadians, including by a number of wealthy politicians who locked their jurisdictions down and told everyone else to stay home.

Starting January 7, Canadians will have to show a negative COVID-19 test before being able to return home. Those who test positive will be stranded and will have to cover accommodation and costs. Those who test negative will still have to quarantine for 14 days.
