Carney teases MORE immigration into Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suggested that the country can begin a "controlled increase" of Canada's population, claiming that Canada's immigration system is now under control.

The comments were made to the New York Times during an interview covering a whole range of issues. He made the remark just over a month before Canada's government is required to release its immigration numbers for the upcoming year.

“Now the question starts to become, when do we resume some controlled increase in the population, which is the nature of Canada?” he told the reporters. “So that will happen, and we just want to make sure that we’ve got it under control.”

In July, Carney claimed that Canada had "taken back control" of the immigration system after there was enormous growth in the population under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Officials in Canada had planned on increasing the annual number of admitted permanent residents to 500,000, but in 2024 and 2025, the country started to decrease its immigration numbers.

"What we’ve basically been doing is first getting the system under control. So if we want to let in 500,000 people through formal immigration and some temporary workers and students, we cap things and we let in 500,000 people. There were years where the expectation would have been for example, 700,000, and it ended up 2 million. The overshoots were, and you know it’s a country of 40 million people," Carney said during the interview.

The most recent immigration level plan called for 385,000 admissions of permanent residents in 2026 and 370,000 in 2027 and 2028, per CityNews.

The CD Howe Institute has recommended that Canada continue to shrink immigration targets over the course of the next three years.
