Prime Minister Mark Carney’s latest election pitch includes a new taxpayer-funded in vitro fertilization (IVF) program aimed at helping Canadians, particularly those in the so-called “2SLGBTQI+” community, start families.

Carney announced the plan on Easter Monday on X, tweeting: “If you want to become a parent, my government will help make it more affordable. We’ll introduce a new IVF funding program to help cover costs for a standard treatment cycle.”

Under the “Canada Strong” campaign platform, the Liberal Party promises to launch a national IVF initiative offering up to $20,000 for one standard cycle of treatment. The Liberals say this program will "make life more affordable for Canadians who want to become parents, especially 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians who face a costly journey to parenthood."

“We will work with the provinces and territories to make sure more Canadians can access this support,” the platform states.

Canadians are scheduled to vote on April 28. Carney, who has positioned himself as a practicing Catholic, has been “red-lighted” by Campaign Life Coalition for backing policies that go against Catholic teachings, including support for abortion and euthanasia.

The Catholic Church officially condemned IVF in 1987 in Donum Vitae, a declaration by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. According to Church teaching, IVF is considered “gravely immoral," reports LifeSiteNews. "TThe Catholic Church also strongly condemns abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, gender ideology, and other practices that Carney promotes," the site writes.

As pointed out by LifeSiteNews, IVF often results in the intentional creation and destruction of human embryos. “Excess” embryos—created as a backup for failed attempts—are commonly discarded, treated as “medical waste.” Reports indicate that more than a million embryos are currently frozen in the US, and up to 93 percent of embryos created through IVF are ultimately destroyed.

Critics argue that IVF treats human life as a commodity. They warn of ethical concerns around producing embryos with the foreknowledge that many will not survive or be used.
