"No member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, should grab at someone's camera simply because they're being asked a question they apparently don't approve of."
A video taken by Downs and shared on X shows the reporter attempting to ask Crockett a series of questions before she ultimately reached for his cell phone camera and allegedly assaulted him in the process.
"I just left Capitol Police headquarters in DC where I filed a police report against Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett for ASSAULT, BATTERY AND ATTEMPTED THEFT OF MY CELL phone simply because I respectfully asked her to condemn the violence she has been inciting at Tesla Showrooms," Downs wrote in a post on X.
Crockett, dressed in all white, can be seen in the video reaching for Downs's phone and making physical contact with him. She initially ignored the reporter's questions as the group walked down the hallway.
"Congresswoman Crockett, you were recently on a Tesla Takedown call, calling for violence on [March 29]. Would you like to clarify your comments?" Downs asked Crockett. Before the reporter could finish his second question asking Rep. Crockett to condemn the ongoing violence targeting Elon Musk's Tesla, the congresswoman used her left hand to reach for his cell phone.
Downs told The Post Millennial in a statement: "Rep. Crockett's reaction to my question about her involvement in the 'Tesla Takedown' is, to say the least, disturbing. No member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, should grab at someone's camera simply because they're being asked a question they apparently don't approve of."
The reporter's questioning stems from comments Rep. Crockett made on March 19 during a Tesla Takedown "call to action" meeting, where she stated, "All I want to see happen on my birthday is for Elon to be taken down." Tesla Takedown is a coalition of several left-wing activist groups reportedly funded by ActBlue that have been organizing nationwide protests at Tesla showrooms and dealerships amid ongoing violence.
Attorney General Pam Bondi reacted to Crockett's calls to target Elon Musk in a recent interview with Fox News, urging the congresswoman to "tread very carefully." The Department of Justice has been probing the violent attacks carried out on Tesla property in recent months as "domestic terrorism." Several suspects are facing up to 20 years in prison.
Rep. Crockett's Chief of Staff Kimberly McClain told The Post Millennial in a Tuesday statement: "This morning an individual attempted to invade Congresswoman Crockett's personal safety for a soundbite. She is appreciative for Congressman Tim Burchett for putting himself between herself and the indvidual to ensure that everyone made it to Committee. In a time of division, he put respect and safety first and Congresswoman Crockett appreciates it."
