"Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now. The only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess."
Rep. Jasmine Crockett has come under fire for comments she made over the weekend, calling Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, "Governor Hot Wheels" during a Saturday speech.
"We in these hot a** Texas streets, honey," Crockett said at a Saturday Human Rights Campaign dinner in Los Angeles, which was met with laughs. She continued, "y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now. The only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess."
At the age of 26, Abbott was left paralyzed after a large oak tree fell on him while he was out for a run, resulting in his wheelchair use.
The comment was widely criticized and has sparked a censure effort in the House. Rep. Randy Weber told Fox News that he would be introducing a censure resolution against Crockett soon.
"The story of our great governor of Texas is one of unwavering resilience and perseverance. Meanwhile, the actions of Jasmine Crockett – stooping to vile levels of discrimination and despicable political attacks – are nothing short of reprehensible," Weber said.
"It's painfully obvious she was never taught a single thing about Texas class, as her behavior is a disgrace to everything Texas and the United States stands for," he added.
The resolution calls Crockett’s comments "discriminatory in nature" and "the latest in a continued series of inappropriate comments expressed by the representative from Texas," a draft copy obtained by Fox News stated.
Crockett’s comments were lambasted on social media, with conservative activist Scott Presler writing, "I don’t use this word often, but Jasmine Crockett truly is wicked. To call Greg Abbott 'Governor Hot Wheels' is cruel, contemptible & speaks to your lack of character."
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote, "Jasmine Crockett continues to embarrass herself, the state of Texas, and the US Congress by referring to Governor Greg Abbott as 'Governor Hot Wheels.’" He later added, "This woman is trash."
Women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines wrote, "Democrats, please keep giving Jasmine Crockett the microphone. We'll never lose an election again."
In response to the backlash, Crockett wrote, "
I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable. Literally, the next line I said was that he was a “Hot A** Mess,” referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged."
