The manager reportedly told the father that the Evil Queen was being played by a woman who "was so excited to get the role."
A conservative Christian family spent $300 on a character meet and greet dinner for their daughter at Disney World and were shocked when the Evil Queen was played by a man. When the father of the family spoke to a manager at Disney about the casting choice, he learned that the man was actually transgender.
The manager reportedly told the father that the Evil Queen was being played by a woman who "was so excited to get the role." When he pressed, and wanted to know if the individual was a biological male, the manager told him he "could not answer that question."
Disney went gender neutral in 2021 when they removed "all gender references" from guidelines for casting. The goal was to "improve inclusivity at the park." After that, visitors to Disney were faced with men playing women's parts, such as an instance where the role of Fairy Godmother's Apprentice was played by a male.
"A family has reached out to That Park Place claiming they spent over $300 on a character meet and greet dinner at Walt Disney World... only to discover the Evil Queen character was almost certainly a biological male," said Walt Disney World Pro., which shared the video. "This represents the first time we've heard of Disney using a biological male to play an iconic biological female face character in the parks."
When the video surfaced online, many rushed to defend Disney and the actor who played the Evil Queen, saying that it's a centuries-old tradition for men to play women's roles. And yes, that was true in the era of Shakespeare or the Greek tragedies when women were not permitted to participate, and even in vaudeville or comedy when the conceit of men playing women is used for laughs.
However, it's hard to imagine this was simply a neutral casting choice when much has been made about the inclusion of gender identity at Disney from the corporate and executive levels on down. Disney executive Karey Burke said in 2022 that her goal was to have more LGBTQIA+ characters among the entertainment giant's properties. This was about the same time as the parks stopped using the terms "ladies and gentlemen" and "boys and girls," opting instead for "dreamers of all ages."
Disney adults jumped aboard to bash the post for its assertion that perhaps males should not play iconic female roles, with one user claiming that the concept that a trans actor should not play a woman's role is nothing more than "transphobic."
Others said that the man just looked better than a woman would in that role due to his sharp facial features. Angelina Jolie famously played Maleficent, the evil queen in Beauty and the Beast. Another commenter pointed out that, in Snow White story lore, it almost makes even more sense for the Evil Queen to try to kill Snow White because the girl is prettier than the old hag—who in this case appears to be a trans person who is not female.
"This is literally nothing new lmao they hire based on skill and similar facial features and height to other actors/actresses. Having more defined cheekbones and a sharper jaw is big on hiring villainous roles because it matches the art more as well," said one account to the original poster.
Disney has been at the forefront of America's culture wars. As the stewards of fairy tales and core stories, they have a unique position among the corporate entertainment entities, and they have used that position to usher in far-left concepts like gender ideology, diversity equity and inclusion, feminism, and critical race theory. Packaged in bright colors, kid-friendly voices, and catchy tunes, the transformation of Disney has given many fans of their stories franchises, like Beauty and Beast, Snow White, Cinderella, Star Wars, and Marvel, cultural whiplash.
The massive international corporation went to war with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over his Parental Rights in Education law, which prevented schools from keeping students' trans or non-binary gender identity secret from parents and prohibited the teaching of sex ed in ways that were not age-appropriate. A majority of Americans backed the common sense education law while Disney fought against it at the highest levels of their enterprise.
