An armed robbery attempt on the 4100 block of International Boulevard in Oakland at about 10 am Monday ultimately culminated in a gunfire exchange between two suspects and a Jewelry store worker.

Police have since kicked off a search for at least two concepts connected to the attempted robbery and attack, CBS Bay Area reports.

The worker, who requested to not be named, stated that he saw a Toyota Camry pull up in a seemingly suspicious manner outside his shop.

"I saw two guys creeping up really quick so I was like, it's a robbery," he explained, according to KTVU.

Then, the two men allegedly entered the store while sporting masks and wielding guns.

The worker said he then fired a shot from his 9mm pistol.

"They told me don't move, or we'll shoot. So I started shooting at them because they had the guns pointed at me," said the worker. "They were shooting back. It was going back and forth for like 20 seconds."

Approximately 20 shots were fired at the witness, according to his account, with one wielding a .40-caliber handgun with a drum magazine and the other a 9mm with an extended magazine. Both items are illegal to own in the state of California.

"And then I ducked, right, and then I waited to see him like scrambling. The other guy was still shooting. And then I popped my head out and shot about seven more," said the worker.

When escaping, a man left a shoe behind. A third person reportedly drove the two away in the getaway vehicle. One of the suspects took a bullet to his shoulder, per the worker.

Oakland police showed up after the commotion had come to an end and took a report; officers did not arrest the worker.

"They said, ‘You did the right thing.’ They said, ‘You followed - you did everything right.’ They said we're just going to take your guns until the investigation's done, but I have more," he told reporters.

Bullet holes were observed on the walls, mirror, back room and floor of the store after the gunfire exchange.

The worker delivered a personal promise to the suspects should they decide to make another trip back to the store.

"If you come back again, try to do the same thing, we're just going to defend ourselves. At this point, you have to," he said.
