Last month, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley announced that her government will be removing the Queen as their head of state in 2021.
Until then, Canada and Barbados will have shared an almost identical governmental structure, the Westminster Model. Which begs the question: Should Canada remove the Queen from our government as well?
Despite the existence of anti-monarchist organizations in Canada, along with a Commonwealth coalition of republican movements, the Quebec separatist movement will likely be closest they'll ever get. A majority of Canadians have never even considered the notion, not out of reverence towards the Crown, but an understandable disinterest in the study and reform of Canadian governmental structures.
But, there's another issue for any aspiring Canadian Robespierre. Canada's constitutional monarchy is protected by the need for unanimous consent to remove the monarchy, a requirement which states that every single member of federal or provincial parliament must agree the motion.
In the words of Boris Johnson, it seems "the monarchy is beyond reproach."
