"They’re using CBP and ICE as their own national police force. They’re sending them all over the country to justify a narrative that this country is under siege by undocumented immigrants."
During a recent appearance on MSNOW (formerly MSNBC), Gomez discussed a federal court ruling that blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from requiring members of Congress to provide prior notice before visiting detention centers for oversight purposes. The policy had been implemented by the Department of Homeland Security under the Trump administration.
During the interview, Gomez described the ruling as a “big win” and a “step towards accountability” for the Trump administration. He then argued that federal immigration agencies are being used to promote a narrative regarding illegal immigration in the US.
“They’re using CBP and ICE as their own national police force. They’re sending them all over the country to justify a narrative that this country is under siege by undocumented immigrants,” Gomez said.
The judge ruled that the Trump administration’s policy likely violated an appropriations law passed by Congress, which explicitly states that DHS may not use federal funds to require lawmakers to “provide prior notice of the intent to enter a facility” when conducting oversight of detention sites.
Gomez was one of the lawmakers involved in the lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s policy. The suit argued that DHS lacked the legal authority to restrict unannounced visits by members of Congress.
In a post on X, he wrote, “This ruling in the lawsuit I helped lead is a win against Trump’s unaccountable DHS and ICE. Oversight isn’t optional. It’s our constitutional duty. As your representative, I will inspect detention facilities and make sure these agencies never operate in the shadows.”
Gomez’s claims that mass illegal immigration is merely a “narrative” comes after more than 7 million illegal immigrants entered the country under the Biden administration, according to a previous Customs and Border Protection report.
