Detroit school board removes Ben Carson's name from High School of Science and Medicine

"It's very sad that we've reached the point where political ideology trumps the whole purpose of an educational institution," Carson said.

A Detroit school board voted to remove Ben Carson's name from the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine. Carson was a celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon who grew up in Detroit and went on to serve in the Trump administration. Carson also ran for president.

Carson, former Housing & Urban Development Secretary, reacted Monday to his name being removed from a high school in his hometown of Detroit, telling Fox News Host Sean Hannity, "It's very sad that we've reached the point where political ideology trumps the whole purpose of an educational institution."

"And we're seeing this wokeness spreading throughout our community to the destruction of our community," Carson said. "How does it do any good for us to demonize people with whom we disagree and to teach that to our children at a time when the math scores are down, the reading scores are down; academic performance is down?"

Carson also discussed the systemic failures of students at many public high schools. He said that students graduate despite being "functionally illiterate", and the schools appear to be more concerned with pushing woke ideology.

"We want to change this whole narrative, and we need an inoculation to indoctrination, and that's why we've created that program," the retired Johns Hopkins surgeon said of the "Little Patriots" program at the American Cornerstone Institute, which he heads.

"In the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, a racial reckoning led to many schools, buildings and roads being renamed," local news reported.

"Within the 'black community,'" said podcaster and US Army vet Darrell Harrison, "success is as much a cultural matter as an economic or occupational one. And because it’s cultural, how ideologically woke the person is matters. That is why it’s anathema to name a school after a Ben Carson, yet laudable to honor a George Floyd."

The Detroit School Board voted to change the name of the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine despite the administration and a student poll recommending keeping the name as-is.

Hannity noted that the Detroit School District said in a statement that community members had been "expressing concerns regarding how, under emergency management, the school's name was changed…" and that people in the city reportedly raised concerns that Carson's political positions and decisions in government "did not reflect Detroiters."
