The Biden administration apparently knew three months ahead of time that the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline was a target of a covert attack by a small team of Ukrainian divers who reported directly to the commander in chief of the armed forces of Ukraine.

The details of the plan were reportedly uncovered by a European intelligence service and subsequently shared with the CIA in 2022, per The Washington Post.

The reporting by European intelligence had been shared on Discord, a social media platform, which had been part of a leak of a trove of documents by Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira. This information from Teixeira provides the most specific evidence linking the Ukrainian government to the attack that took place in the Baltic Sea. The US and other Western nations have condemned the attack as a dangerous act of sabotage on Europe’s energy infrastructure.

The pipeline brought much-needed natural gas from Russia to Germany.

The intelligence report was based on sensitive information obtained from a source in Ukraine. Though the source’s information could not be confirmed by WaPo, the CIA had shared the report with Germany and other European countries last June. The officials who made this information available spoke under the condition of anonymity.

WaPo reported that the information uncovered included “highly specific details,” which included the specific number of operatives and modes of attack. It also revealed that Western allies had suspected that Kyiv was behind the attack. Now, that suspicion has only been bolstered in recent months as German law enforcement have apparently discovered evidence about the attack that has a shockingly similar element to what the European service said Ukraine already had planned.

The attack took place on September 6, 2022, when three underwater explosions resulted in massive leaks on Nord Stream’s first two pipelines, leaving only of the four links in the network still operative. There were those within the Biden administration who suggested Russia was to blame for the attack, with Biden referring to the attack as “a deliberate act of sabotage.”

Biden vowed to “get to the bottom of exactly what” happened. The report noted that as winter approached after the attack, it was seen as plausible that Russia could have carried out the attack as a form of blackmail against European countries who wished to support Ukraine in the conflict.
