UK regulators have now approved the new Starlink satellite internet service from Elon Musk, and beta kits have started to ship out.
This makes it the third market Starlink has entered, after the US and Canada. Reportedly, the next countries to get Starlink will be Australia, Greece and Germany, who have all approved the project.
According to Business Insider, the service offers high-capacity internet for people no matter where they are in the world, including in rural areas.
One customer in rural Devonshire near the Welsh border says he has decent internet for the first time. British Telecom could only give him a 0.5 mbps connection, and with Starlink he now has a respectable 85 mbps to work with, making things like Zoom conferences and streaming movies possible.
SpaceX claims that users will be able to get from 50 to 150mbps on average, with some users being able to get speeds of over 200mbps in optimal conditions.
SpaceX already has launched some 830 or so satellites as part of the Starlink project, and by the time they are done they plan to have networked some 42,000 Starlink satellites.
As of this writing, the Starlink service costs around $600 initially and around $120 per month for the subscription, depending on where you are geographically.
