New York City Mayor Eric Adams is being criticized for insisting that the city remains the "safest big city in America," despite a recent subway shooting that shook residents' sense of security.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday in a Brooklyn subway, saw a 36-year-old man shot in the head with his own gun during an altercation with another passenger. The victim, who was armed, reportedly provoked the altercation, leading to the violent outcome.
Video of the altercation shows passengers on board fearing for their safety, with one woman heard yelling at the two men fighting that there are babies on board the subway.
This shooting comes on the heels of Governor Kathy Hochul's announcement of deploying 1,000 National Guard, state police, and MTA officers to conduct bag searches in city subways—an unprecedented move aimed at bolstering security amid rising concerns over public safety.
However, Mayor Adams downplayed the significance of the shooting, labeling it as an "isolated incident" and dismissing allegations of disorder in the city as "a lot of BS." He instead referred to New York City as “resilient.”
According to the New York Post, statistics show that subway crime in the city is up 13.2% as of March 10. Major crime in the New York City subway system is up nearly 50% compared to what it was during this time last year.
“This is the safest big city in America. We are the best city on the globe, period. None of all that other stuff. It’s just maddening,” Adams said to Q104.3 FM's Jim Keer on Saturday.
As concerns over public safety increase in New York City, Mayor Adams’ statement of confidence in New York City's security which has come under scrutiny.
