Russian forces have reportedly begun attacking the Ukrainian capital as explosions were heard in Kyiv early Friday morning. Over 100 Ukrainians have already been killed in the first full day of combat.
According to the Associated Press, After a full day of airstrikes on military targets and cities the Russian military continued in their mission to conquer Ukraine's largest city and take the country's seat of government. Thousands of people in the city sought shelter in Kyiv's subway stations.
Ukraine forces claimed to have shot down a Russian aircraft over Kyiv Friday morning. Debris from the plane reportedly fell onto an apartment building and set it on fire. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, at least three people in the building were injured.
Sanctions announced earlier in the day by US President Joe Biden and other countries appear to have done little to dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin’s continued assault on Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CBS he was convinced that Russia was intent on overthrowing the Ukrainian government and that Putin wants to "…reconstitute the Soviet empire."
In an emotional address Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded for help as civilians continued to flee the country. Zelenskyy said that 137 "heroes," had been killed and 316 people wounded.
He concluded the speech by saying that "...the fate of the country depends fully on our army, security forces, all of our defenders."
