The family of a 22-year-old man who passed away on November 9 after allegedly being beaten in an Alabama prison is searching for answers after being told by the warden that his death was the result of an overdose. They believe the evidence shows he was actually beaten up, drugged, and possibly raped by a fellow inmate.

Daniel Williams, who was just days shy of being released from a 12-month sentence for theft at Staton Prison in Elmore County, was taken to a hospital after being found unresponsive on October 22 and placed on life support. With little brain function left, the decision was eventually made to switch it off.

According to WVTM, Williams' family was notified by a warden at Staton Prison last week that he was in the hospital, having had an overdose.

When they went to see him in the hospital, however, nurses told them he had been "assaulted and beaten really badly." His fiancée, Amber, recalled that he "had bruises all down his arm, like down to his fingers," and "cuts up and down and bruises on his legs."

She lamented the fact that their daughter would grow up having no memory of her father.

"I called the warden, and I cussed him," Williams' father, Terry, explained. "I said, dude, you know this is not an overdose case? You know exactly what happened. How is this crap going to happen like this?"

Mr. Williams added that the incident is under investigation by the Alabama Department of Corrections' Law Enforcement Services Division, with a possible inmate-on-inmate assault reported.

An autopsy will be performed soon, however, the family said they want to have an independent checkup carried out if they can find the money to do so.

A GoFundMe was set up by Elite Drain and Septic, the company Williams' father works for. It has since raised over $14,000 to help pay for the funeral and other expenses.
