"He could have undermined the message so much that he could actually control exactly what people think, and that's our job."
A clip has resurfaced of an MSNBC host appearing to suggest that it is the "job" of media to "control exactly what people think." Mika Brzezinski, who anchors Morning Joe alongisde her husband, Joe Scarborough, made the comments in 2017 while the network was still navigating the Trump presidency.
The clip went viral, with many sharing it as proof that legacy outlets are more interested in pushing a particular narrative then getting to the truth.
During the segment, which first aired on February 22, 2017, Brzezinski was responding to Yamiche Alcindor, who suggested that Trump fulfilling his campaign promises was frightening to elites.
"He's really someone who got on stage, told you exactly what he was gonna do, and then did it, and I think a lot of people in Washington, a lot of intellectuals are saying, 'what's going on, this feels so uncertain'," she said, "but for Trump supporters, and even those who are sceptical of him, he's looking like he's getting stuff done."
Scarborough said Alcindor's statements matched what he'd heard from Trump supporters.
"I think that the dangerous edges here are that he's trying to undermine the media, trying to make up his own facts," Brzezinski added, "and it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsten, he could have undermined the message so much that he could actually control exactly what people think, and that's our job."
Scarborough went on to suggest that Trump's statements regarding the media made him sound "more like Mussolini or Lenin," or "a dictator in training."
At the time, Brzezinski's comments were slammed by many on social media, who suggested they were symbolic of why the media "has no credibility."
She attempted to walk her comments back, claiming she meant that "it's the media's job to keep President Trump from making up his own facts, NOT that it's our job to control what people think."
The people did not buy it, however, and over the years, the clip has resurfaced on numerous ocassions to highlight the problems plaguing the media.
