"Deportation Depot" will be located at the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, near the Lake City Airport.
The announcement from DeSantis comes after deportations from "Alligator Alcatraz" began last month. "We are authorizing and will be soon opening this new illegal immigration detention, processing and deportation facility here in North Florida," DeSantis said.
The location of the new detention facility will be at the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, Florida, near the Lake City Airport. "The reason of this is not to just house people indefinitely. We want to process, stage, and then return illegal aliens to their home country. That is the name of the game, and that's what we do in Florida," DeSantis continued.
"We know that this is an important national priority, not only of President Trump, but of the American people. Of all the issues in the election, I can tell you, this immigration and border issue was either the top or right near the top on all people's minds, and so we have identified this location. It'll be able to hold more than 1,300 illegal alien detainees. You will have the same services that you have at Alligator Alcatraz," DeSantis added. "Costs will be reimbursed by our federal partners."
The Florida governor said that the center will not be operational immediately, but will be fully functional soon and will help to house and deport illegal immigrants in the United States. Last week, a federal judge temporarily stopped additional construction at "Alligator Alcatraz," citing concerns over the environment in the Everglades.
This comes as the Trump administration has hit a record low in illegal immigration coming into the United States.
