Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he has told his finance minister Rod Phillips to return to Canada, following news that he violated the guidelines by vacationing in the south with his wife as the province went under strict lockdown.

Phillips was posting pictures and videos of himself in his riding on social media to make people believe that he was in Ontario, when in reality he was enjoying a vacation in Saint Barthelemy. Phillips had also shared his government's preaching to stay home on his social media.

Ford, who said earlier this week that vacations "put people in jeopardy," released a statement stating "I have let the minister know that his decision to travel is completely unacceptable and that it will not be tolerated again—by him or any member of our cabinet and caucus."

He also said "I have also told the minister I need him back in the country immediately." Phillips isn't the first member of Doug Ford's caucus to flout their rules, earlier this fall, MPP Sam Oosterhoff posted pictures of him with a large group of people, all not wearing masks. Premier Doug Ford also travelled to his cottage over Easter for what he said was maintenance issues, despite telling Ontarians not to do so.

Phillips has since apologized, saying "I deeply regret travelling over the holidays. It was a mistake and I apologize."
