Herman Cain, a high-ranking Republican official close to President Trump, aged 74, died after having lost a battle to the coronavirus, according to CNBC. His death was announced today.
Dan Calabrese, who had previously advised the public of Cain's unfortunate illness posted updates about his struggles, shared the sad news today.
"We all prayed so hard every day. We knew the time would come when the Lord would call him home, but we really liked having him here with us, and we held out hope he’d have a full recovery," said Calabrese wrote.
Cain had previously survived a bout of advanced colon cancer, and because of this victory some believed that he'd be able to rally and beat the coronavirus as well.
Cain's most recent public appearance was at campaign rally for US President Trump in Tulsa, OK on June 20. He checked into an Atlanta hospital on July 1, two days after his positive diagnosis. The illness was not immediately critical and he did not require a respirator.
Cain was a prominent business executive and chairman of a branch of the Federal Reserve, before becoming more politically active with the Republican party.
Cain's social media on Monday noted that he was improving, before he took a turn for the worse.
