Former Vice President Mike Pence underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker on Wednesday, although his office didn't disclose the information until Thursday.

The surgical procedure was needed because Pence was experiencing symptoms associated with a slow heart rate.

According to Fox News, the operation was a complete success, and went off without a hitch. The former VP is expected to make a complete recovery from what is being called a "routine surgery". A statement released by his office said he is expected to recover quickly and "return to normal activity in the coming days."

Pence said in a statement:

"I am grateful for the swift professionalism and care of the outstanding doctors, nurses and staff at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, including Dr. Brett Atwater and Dr. Behnam Tehrani."

"I also appreciate the consultation of my long-time Indiana physicians, Dr. Michael Busk and Dr. Charles Taliercio at Ascension St. Vincent. My family has been truly blessed by the work of these dedicated healthcare professionals."
