The network's coverage drew 10 million viewers during the 10 pm hour when Trump delivered his keynote speech.
Fox News garnered its highest-ever ratings for political convention coverage during the Republican National Convention (RNC), drawing in 10 million viewers during the 10 pm hour when GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump delivered his keynote address.
Trump’s speech, which lasted 92 minutes, attracted the highest-rated single-night convention coverage in the history of the network. According to Nielsen ratings, Fox News’ entire primetime block averaged 9 million viewers, with 1.6 million of these viewers in the 25-54 age demographic.
In contrast, CNN saw only 2.1 million viewers, while MSNBC attracted 1.2 million viewers in the same time slot.
Trump’s keynote speech was highly anticipated as it was his first public address since the failed assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally that left him with a wound to his right ear after a bullet grazed him. Immediately after the shooting, it was reported that Trump completely revised his speech for the RNC, incorporating many references to the incident.
On the third night of the RNC, 7 million viewers tuned in to Fox News when Trump’s selected running mate, JD Vance, accepted the nomination and addressed the crowd as the vice-presidential candidate for the first time.
The successful RNC viewership comes as the Democratic Party faces internal turmoil, with increasing speculation that incumbent President Joe Biden may step down as the nominee. This follows his poor debate performance, declining poll numbers, and public and private calls from key Democratic officials for him to step aside before the November election.
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to be held from August 19-22.
