Allies of Vice President Kamala Harris are mobilizing to ensure she becomes the Democratic Party’s nominee for president if President Joe Biden steps aside in the coming days. This effort comes amid growing reports suggesting that Biden's presidential campaign could be nearing its end.

According to Politico, multiple individuals involved in the push for Harris’s nomination are working diligently despite rumors that she might not be the chosen successor. The strategy to position Harris as the nominee centers on highlighting her extensive experience as vice president, her handling of both foreign and domestic issues, and her strong support for abortion rights. The push has not been sanctioned by Harris or her team.

However, there is significant doubt within the Democratic Party about Harris's ability to win an election against Donald Trump. Trump is currently leading Biden in nearly every poll, both in the general election and swing states, and Harris’s poll numbers have similarly been lackluster, with voters not viewing her as a viable presidential option.

However, one individual involved in the situation told Politico that it would be a mistake to overlook the first Black woman to serve as vice president as the presidential nominee.

“Step one, is to make certain that it is known she is imminently qualified on policy from a loud chorus of people making the case on TV and online,” the source said. “Step two involves an organized effort to make the case to yes, the American people, but also to make the case to a convention, it needs to be her” for the same reasons.

In recent days, multiple reports have predicted that Biden may withdraw from the election and if so would not explicitly endorse Harris. This would lead to an open Democratic convention rather than Harris automatically assuming the position.

“Two or three days ago, people were quiet. And now, as of yesterday especially, people were like, ‘We need to be ready,’” said a former Biden aide. “They are young in their infancy, but they have grown stronger by the hour.”
