Vice President Kamala Harris appeared in a prerecorded segment at the BET Awards on Sunday which was immediately mocked for being “cringe.” The segment, which was a campaign video for the Biden-Harris ticket, featured Harris in conversation with actress Taraji P. Henson, discussing key political issues for the upcoming election.

“Oh, Madam VP Harris, I’m worried about the election,” Ms. Henson said while on Facetime with the vice president. “Women’s reproductive rights are on the line. Our Supreme Court is on the line. Our basic freedoms are being tested, Madam VP I know you’ve been traveling across the country, what are you hearing?”

“Yeah, girl I’m out here in these streets,” Harris responded. “And let me tell you, you’re right, Taraji. There is so much at stake in this moment.”

Harris continued, saying, “The majority of us believe in freedom and equality. But these extremists, as they say — they ’not like us,’” referencing rapper Kendrick Lamar’s diss track towards Drake.

Harris went on to claim that there is a “full-on attack on our fundamental freedoms” including the freedom to vote, the freedom to love who you love, the freedom to be safe from gun violence, and the freedom for women to make their own decisions about their bodies.

Immediately after the segment was aired, social media users mocked Harris’ actions as another display of her cringeworthy behavior. The video was posted on X, which prompted X owner Elon Musk to describe the display as a “toenail curling level of cringe.”

The awards ceremony also caused controversy by paying tribute to OJ Simpson during its In Memoriam segment. “I think they shouldn’t include anyone of that caliber — a wife beater, murderer … can’t imagine why they would include someone like that.” Ron Goldman's father Fred said after the show.
