Indigenous group FSIN is calling for the next Governor General to be Indigenous, this following the disgraceful resignation of Julie Payette last-week.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron wrote in a press release Monday "When the newcomers came to these lands all those years ago, the first relationship the Queens’ subjects formed was with First Nations."

FSIN, which represents 74 Indigenous tribes in Saskatchewan, says that the move would give Canada a national indigenous identity, which would help with reconciliation.

"We want to reinvigorate the role of the governor general and the Crown relationship with our Inherent and Treaty Rights holders," Cameron adds.

If the group gets their way, it would make the first Indigenous Governor General. Chief Justice Richard Wagner in charge of the Governor General's duties until a replacement is picked.
