California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) canceled appearances scheduled for Monday shortly after President Biden announced he was exiting the 2024 presidential race. The governor was scheduled to appear at the US Ninth Circuit judicial conference in Sacramento on Monday. This comes after President Biden announced his decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race following requests from Democratic lawmakers and donors after his dismal debate performance against Donald Trump last month.
President Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, but there has been mass speculation from analysts over the past year that Gov. Newsom could enter the race. Though, Newsom has denied the claims.
After learning Biden was exiting the race, Gov. Newsom released a statement on X and thanked Biden for his "selfless" and "extraordinary" leadership.
"President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president — a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans. He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents," wrote Newsom.
