Georgia man kills supermarket cashier after dispute over store's mask policy

A male suspect entered a Big Bear story in Decatur, Georgia, in DeKalb County, on Monday evening, and got shot the store's cashier over the masking policy. The cashier was taken to a local hospital and there pronounced dead. The cashier's name was not released.

While checking out of the store, the suspect took issue with the masking policy that was upheld by the management of the Big Bear store. The suspect, who was later identified as 30-year-old Victor Lee Tucker, left without completing his purchases, walked back in, and opened fire on the cashier, according to local news.

The local police statement read that "Tucker walked directly back to the cashier, pulled out a handgun and shot her." A security guard, who is 30-year-veteran of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office and a sheriff's deputy, returned fire.

Officers arrested Tucker as "he was attempting to crawl out the front door of the supermarket."

Sheriff Melody M. Maddox of DeKalb County reported in a news conference that the deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest, which very likely saved his life.

Both the suspect and the officer were taken to a hospital. Another cashier was "grazed by a bullet," but was treated on the scene and was not taken to the hospital.

The investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is ongoing.
