President Trump issued an executive order to rename Denali and the Gulf of Mexico during his first hours in office.
The tech companies updated their maps this week, restoring Denali to its original name, Mount McKinley. According to the New York Post, Google updated theirs on Saturday, and as of Feb. 15, Apple Maps has also changed the name back.
President Trump issued an executive order to rename Denali and the Gulf of Mexico during his first hours in office, which stated, "In 1917, the country officially honored President [William] McKinley through the naming of North America’s highest peak."
"Yet after nearly a century, President Obama’s administration, in 2015, stripped the McKinley name from federal nomenclature, an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice," the order continued. "This order honors President McKinley for giving his life for our great Nation and dutifully recognizes his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for all Americans."
Earlier this week, Google updated the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America but was slower in changing the name of Mount McKinley, the United States' highest peak in the nation.
Trump's executive order directed the interior secretary to enforce the new names within 30 days and update the federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), overseen by the US Geological Survey (USGS). A Google representative confirmed that the renaming would take place once the GNIS update was complete.
The Alaskan mountain was named for William McKinley in 1896, the year before he became president.
