Grayson Murray’s parents confirm 30-year-old golfer died by suicide

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has reportedly died by suicide, his parents confirmed in a statement released by the PGA Tour on Sunday. His death was reported on Saturday.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare,” read the statement from Murray’s parents.

"We have so many questions that have no answers," it continued.

“We would like to thank the PGA tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

Murray's death was announced on Saturday, following reports that he had withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday due to illness.

Murray, 30, was recognized as one of the best junior golfers, having won IMG Junior World titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008. At 16, he became the second youngest player to join the PGA’s developmental Korn Ferry Tour. He also participated in the 2013 US Open at the age of 19.

Murray's passing has left the golf community and his fans mourning the loss of a talented athlete whose life was cut tragically short. The PGA Tour has stated that grief counselors will be available at this week’s events. 

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement following the initial report that Murray had passed.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."
