The women's Olympic hockey teams for Canada and the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) finally played a preliminary game at the Beijing Olympics. Both teams, however, were forced to don N95 masks for the occasion.

The game suffered a 65-minute delay during a "brief COVID-19 scare," which was what caused officials to require all players wear the masks before the game could start.

According to Sporting News, COVID tests were taken for all the team members at 9am Monday China Standard Time, for a game that was scheduled initially to start at 12:10pm. The short window meant that the tests weren't available for review come game time, causing the delay.

The Russian team was initially aware of the reason for the delay, and showed up for the puck drop, whereas the Canadian team did not appear for theirs. Both teams were warmed up and ready to play, however.

That's when it was decided to play the game, but with every player wearing N95 masks.

The test results came in after the end of the second period, all of them negative. At that point the Russian players were able to ditch the masks, but it didn't save the game for them. The Canadian team breezed on to an easy 6-1 victory, improving their Olympic standings to 3-0.
